Buide mac Báin

Ailill's man who drives the stolen bull toward the camp and is speared at a ford by Cúchulainn.

Overview

Buide mac Báin leads three score of Ailill's men, all in cloaks, down from Sliab Cuilinn with the Brown Bull and its heifers. Cúchulainn asks where they got the cattle and where the herdsmen are. They say they found one herdsman and have him with them. Cúchulainn goes after them to the ford in three great strides, asks the leader's name, and throws a short spear through his armpit that severs one of his livers in two. The ford is called Ath Buide after him, and the bull gets into the camp anyway.

‘One who neither fears nor favours you,’ he said. ‘Buide mac Báin.’
