Ferchu Loingsech

A Connacht outlaw who goes with a dozen men to kill Cúchulainn and win Ailill and Medb's forgiveness, and gets his head set on a stone.

Overview

Ferchu Loingsech is a Connachtman who has pillaged Ailill and Medb's border lands since the day they took the kingship and has never once visited their camp. Hearing that one man has held the four provinces since summer's end, he decides with his dozen followers to bring Cúchulainn's head and weapons to Ailill and Medb, so they will forgive him his crimes. They fall on Cúchulainn all twelve together, fighting foul, and he strikes off their twelve heads. He sets twelve stones in the ground with a head on each, and Ferchu's head on its stone as well, which gives the name Cinnit Ferchon Loingsig, the Place of Ferchu's Head.
