The Dead at the River Cronn

The men who die at the river Cronn, including Cronn and Caemdele and the two chroniclers of the Táin, Roan and Roae.

Overview

In one version of the march the river Cronn rises against the army to the height of the treetops. The famous warrior Ualu drowns trying to cross it with a flagstone on his shoulder. Cúchulainn kills Cronn and Caemdele at the river, and Roan and Roae, the two chroniclers of the Táin, die there with a hundred more warriors.

Names in this list

NameNote
Cronn Killed by Cúchulainn in heroic fury, with Caemdele. The text does not say whether Cronn is a man or the river.
Caemdele Killed by Cúchulainn with Cronn at the river.
Roan One of the two chroniclers of the Táin. Dies at the Cronn with a further hundred warriors.
Roae The other of the two chroniclers of the Táin. Dies at the Cronn with Roan.

Some say that this is the reason the tale of the Táin was lost and had to be found again long afterward.
