Culann
Also spelled: Culann the Smith
The smith whose guard hound Cúchulainn kills, and whose hound Cúchulainn then offers to be.
Overview
Culann the Smith gets ready to entertain Conchobor and asks him not to bring too big a company, since he has no land or property, only what he earns with his tongs and his two hands. Conchobor forgets that Cúchulainn is following, and Culann lets out the savage hound that needs three chains and nine men to hold it. Cúchulainn smashes the hound against a pillar, Culann says his life is a waste and his household a desert, and the boy offers to guard his beasts and the whole of Murtheimne Plain until a pup of the same pack is grown. Cathbad names him the Hound of Culann on the spot.
