Finnchaem

Also spelled: Finnchóem, Findchaem, Finnchoem

Conchobor's sister, who takes the baby Cúchulainn to foster and rears him with her own son Conall Cernach.

Overview

When the Ulstermen argue over who should rear Sétanta, Conchobor tells his sister Finnchaem to take the boy. She looks at him and says her heart is full of love for him already, as though he were her own Conall Cernach, and Bricriu points out that one is her own son and the other her sister's son. After Sencha, Blai Briuga, Fergus and Amargin have each put in a claim, the judge Morann gives the teats of a mother to Finnchaem, and the boy is given to Amargin and Finnchaem and reared at Imrith Fort on Murtheimne Plain.
