Cruachan
Also spelled: Cruachan Ai, Cruachan Aí
The fort and stronghold of Connacht, home of Medb and Ailill, where the Táin army gathers and where the Brown Bull of Cuailnge is sent at the end.
Overview
Cruachan is the fort of Connacht, the seat of Medb and Ailill. Kinsella's route list gives it as Rathcroghan, in County Roscommon. The text calls it "the stronghold of Connacht", and Medb says the whole province is ruled from it. Her father the high king gave her that province, and she is named for the fort: Medb of Cruachan.
It is also the home of a second power. The síd at Cruachan belongs to Ochall Ochne, the king of the Connacht síd, whose pig-keeper Rucht quarrels with Bodb's pig-keeper Friuch. After they lose their jobs they spend a year at Cruachan fort as birds of prey.
Medb opens it in bed. The royal bed is laid out in Cruachan fort, Ailill says it is well for the wife of a wealthy man, and the two of them count their goods until it comes down to one bull. Mac Roth returns here after his second failure at Dáire's house, and Medb tells him it was well known the bull would be taken by force if it was not given.
The army is raised at Cruachan. Ailill's brothers come with their troops, and Cormac Connlongas comes with the Ulster exiles, in three companies that Medb inspects until she finds him. Four provinces of Ireland gather there. The druids hold them up for a fortnight waiting for a sign, then they leave on the Monday after Samain, southeast, and the first stage ends at Cúil Silinne.
After that Cruachan is mostly a place that people remember. Ailill tells his men to call the wine the last they took from Cruachan. Medb offers Ferdia the right to live there for ever, and he tells her she is master on the mounds of Cruachan. Scáthach's chant to Cúchulainn has the line "Cruachan's heroes you destroy". Over Ferdia's body Cúchulainn says that no one fighting for Cruachan will ever get the bargain Ferdia got, and in his lament he calls the army that came from "cruel Cruachan". Cethern describes the armed woman who hit him first, and Cúchulainn says, "That was Medb of Cruachan."
Cruachan is also where the story ends for the bulls. Medb sends the Brown Bull of Cuailnge toward it by a roundabout road before the last battle, so that whoever escapes, the bull gets away. When the two bulls fight, the Donn Cuailnge comes back westward past Cruachan with the White-Horned bull hanging off his horns, and goes into the lake near the fort.
